Auto Repair Near LSU in Baton Rouge

Honest car care for students, faculty and the parents who worry about them

LSU brings thousands of students, faculty and staff to this part of Baton Rouge, and a lot of them are a long way from the mechanic back home. Gordon & Sandifer has been a family-owned auto repair shop in Baton Rouge on Perkins Road since 1956, about 8 to 13 minutes from campus. We treat a student’s first car the same way we treat a professor’s pickup. We inspect it, explain what we found in plain words, tell you what needs attention now and what can wait, and start only when you say yes. Mechanical repair, tires and collision repair all happen under one roof, so a dented fender and a warning light can be fixed on the same visit. Parents can rest easier knowing a third-generation family shop is close by.

LSU students, faculty and parents get straight answers from a family shop since 1956

Gordon & Sandifer has been family owned and operated on Perkins Road since 1956 and is now in its third generation. We’ve been BBB Accredited since 1967. ASE certified technicians and an I-CAR certified collision team work in the same building, and nobody gets sold work they don’t need.

For students, that means a shop that explains the problem before anyone talks about cost. For parents paying from out of town, it means an estimate you can follow over the phone. For faculty and staff, it means a shop customers have trusted for 20 and 30 years.

Diagnostics, AC, tires and collision repair for drivers near LSU

A warning light before a drive home is no fun. Check engine light diagnostics go past reading a code: we check freeze-frame and live data and test before replacing anything. A flashing light usually means an active misfire, so ease off and call us.

Walking across a hot parking lot to a car with a weak AC is miserable in August. AC and heating repair starts with finding the cause, including leak testing before a recharge. Leave the car after hours on your way home and we’ll call you in the morning.

Many students rack up highway miles going home on breaks. Tires with good tread and the right pressure matter on those trips and in our heavy rains. We check tread, rotate and balance, repair safe punctures and help you choose new tires when needed.

Crowded lots and busy streets near campus make fender benders common. Our collision repair team fixes the body and paint, checks alignment and sensors in the same shop and helps you through the insurance claim.

Why is my AC blowing warm air on the drive to LSU?

The most common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a weak condenser fan, a failing compressor or a blend door stuck on heat. If the air is cold on the highway and warm at idle, the condenser fan is a good suspect. A leak test tells us what’s really wrong before anything gets recharged.

Baton Rouge summers bring 90-degree highs and heavy humidity, so the AC runs hard most of the year. The condenser sits behind the grille, where it takes hits from road debris and small front-end bumps. If you’ve had a recent fender bender and the AC changed, mention it so we check both.

The shop is about 8 to 13 minutes from LSU by Stanford Avenue and Perkins Road

From the south side of campus, the drive to our shop is about 3.1 miles and usually takes about 8 to 13 minutes. Take Burbank Drive to West Parker Boulevard, then West Lakeshore Drive to Stanford Avenue, and Stanford Avenue to Perkins Road. The shop is at 3825 Perkins Rd.

If classes fill your day, our after-hours drop-off helps. Leave the car on your way home in the evening, and we’ll call you the next morning with what we found.

University Lake, Tiger Stadium and the campus lakes shape how people drive near LSU

The LSU and Lakeshore area is home to the main campus, University Lake and City Park Lake. The lakeshore is a popular place to jog, walk and bike, so expect people and bicycles along the lake roads. University Lake sits about a mile west of our shop.

The University Lakes Project is restoring the lakes to improve water quality and reduce flood risk. Its first phase dredged City Park Lake and Erie Lake and expanded the bird sanctuary in University Lake. The project also aims to give walkers, runners and cyclists safer routes, and some lake streets have closed during the work.

Tiger Stadium holds more than 102,000 fans and sits about 2 miles west of the shop. Most stadium parking is west of the stadium, while most traffic heads east toward I-10, and police use contraflow after games.

How much does car repair cost near LSU?

Cost depends on what’s wrong, the parts your car needs and the time the work takes. You get a clear estimate before any work starts, with what needs attention now separated from what can wait. That makes it easier for students and parents to plan and decide together.

If we find something new during the repair, we call before going further. Customers often mention our fair, consistent prices and the fact that we explain what the car doesn’t need too.

LSU home games pack the roads, so plan car care for a weekday

Home games fill campus roads for hours before and after kickoff. LSU publishes a Waze game-day map and parking updates, and nearby streets can close or switch to contraflow. Our shop is closed on weekends, so schedule repairs Monday through Friday.

If something feels off during the week, like a soft brake pedal or a new noise, call us early in the week so we have time to look at it.

Expert tip: Before a long drive home on a break, check your tire pressure when the tires are cold. Pressure changes about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees, so a cool morning can leave tires low after a hot week.
