Southdowns sits about a mile from our door, so for a lot of families in the neighborhood, Gordon & Sandifer is simply the shop down the street. We have been a family owned auto repair and collision shop on Perkins Road since 1956, and we are now in our third generation. From most homes in the neighborhood, the drive takes about 2 to 7 minutes along Lee Drive and then Perkins Road. What you get when you pull in is the honest family shop that can fix the whole car, even after a wreck. We inspect, show you what we found, tell you what needs attention now and what can wait, and start only when you say yes. Oil, brakes, AC, tires and body work all happen under one roof, so your car never has to bounce between two shops.
Southdowns families have had a neighbor on Perkins Road for 70 years. Gordon & Sandifer has stayed family owned since 1956 by doing the job right and never selling work a car does not need. A shop that upsold people would not last that long in one neighborhood, and that track record is our proof.
Here is what that looks like when you hand us your keys:
Many of our customers have been coming to us for 20 and 30 years, and some now bring in their kids’ first cars. That is why so many neighbors think of us as their auto repair shop in Baton Rouge, and why we treat every estimate like it is going to a family member.
Most driving in Southdowns is short and slow: errands, school drop-offs and quick hops onto Perkins Road and College Drive. That kind of driving is harder on a car than long highway miles. These are the four services we see most often from the neighborhood, all handled in one shop on Perkins Road.
Short trips in Baton Rouge heat count as “severe service” in most owner’s manuals, because the engine rarely warms up all the way. Many cars need an oil change sooner than people expect. It is a quick job, so grab a coffee in our waiting area, catch up on email over the Wi-Fi, and we will come find you when it is done.
Stop-and-go traffic wears pads and rotors faster than open-road driving. If you hear a squeal or feel the pedal pulse, our brake repair work starts with measuring what is left and telling you honestly whether it can wait. You can leave the car with our after-hours drop-off on your way home.
Baton Rouge summers bring 90-degree highs and heavy humidity, so the AC runs most of the year. When it starts blowing warm, our AC and heating repair starts with finding the leak or the failed part before anything gets recharged.
A parking lot bump or a fender bender on Perkins Road does not have to mean two shops. Our collision repair team handles the body, frame and paint, and our mechanics handle the alignment, suspension and sensors the same wreck can knock out. We help you through the insurance claim and keep you updated as the work moves along.
A routine oil change at Gordon & Sandifer usually fits into a normal wait, and most Southdowns customers stay in the waiting area while we work. The time depends on the vehicle and on whether the quick look over the car turns up anything worth showing you. Call ahead and we will give you a realistic window.
If we do spot something, we tell you what it is and whether it needs attention now or can wait until your next visit. You make the call.
From Southdowns, the drive to 3825 Perkins Rd is about 1 mile and takes about 2 to 7 minutes, depending on traffic. Take Lee Drive to Perkins Road. Because it is so close, our after-hours drop-off is easy: leave the car on your way home and we will call once we have looked it over.
Lee Drive between Perkins and Highland gets rough after heavy rain, and the city planned a pothole overlay for fall 2026 ahead of a larger widening project. If your steering wheel sits crooked after a hard hit, mention it when you call.
Brake repair cost near Southdowns depends on what the brakes actually need: pads only, pads and rotors, or a caliper or brake hose. The make, model and parts matter too. You get a clear estimate before any work starts, and nothing begins until you approve it.
We will show you the measurements so you can see the reasons for yourself.
Southdowns is an older subdivision tucked between Perkins Road and Bayou Duplantier, between University Lake and Pollard Estates. Around town it is known for its own Mardi Gras parade, which rolls on the Friday night before Mardi Gras and has grown into one of the longest-running parades in Baton Rouge.
The Krewe of Southdowns started decades ago as a small, sneaky “guerrilla parade” through the back streets, and the neighborhood turned out to join it. It still rolls at night with flambeaux carriers, dancers and hand-built floats, starting at Glasgow Middle School and winding past neighbors’ front yards.
Southdowns Shopping Center sits less than half a mile from our shop. If you are running errands there, it is easy to drop the car off on the same trip.
On the far side of the neighborhood, University Lake draws walkers, joggers and cyclists. A car that sits parked in August heat can come back with a tired battery, and we can test it while you wait.
When the AC cools fine on the open road but blows warm while you sit at a light near Southdowns, common causes are a weak condenser fan, a low charge from a slow leak, or a condenser packed with debris. A proper check finds the cause before any part gets replaced.
The condenser sits right behind the grille, so even a light front-end bump can damage it. Since we do collision and AC work in the same building, that repair stays with one shop.
